No Gut, No Foot, No Horse.

The old saying used to be 'No Foot, No Horse', in those days, horses were working harder than they do today, food was simpler with grains, grass and hay being the main components of a diet. However in the last 30 years diets have become more complex and more processed. Today's horse has different health problems than its ancestors, relating mostly to diet and management, hence the new saying 'No Gut, No Horse'. Horses need to return to the type of diets their gastrointestinal tracts can tolerate, we can offer help and advice on the benefits and on the 'how to' restore a more natural feeding regime. For those in livery or on rented land we can offer a range of natural products, for horses with weight management issues and to support the gastrointestinal tract and hooves.

Phytorigins has it's own herd of pure bred native ponies and a 25 acre site of restored pasture land based in the mountains of Snowdonia, the 25 acre site has woodland, heathland and meadow and is featured as a case study (Caer Carreg y Fran).
There are a growing number of horse owners around the world who view themselves as conservationists and as stewards of native horse and pony breeds, recognising  both the importance and the irreplaceable interaction between the horse, it's health and the environment it lives in.
Many horse owners rely on information provided by equine nutritional science and equine nutritionists to feed their horses, but we at Phytorigins feel that main stream nutritional science isn't a reflection of how horse's eat when grazing freely. Many horse owners want to improve their grazing to improve their horses well being rather than provide highly processed food with 'everything added in'.

There is a growing trend for the use of by- products in horse feed, being promoted as 'nutritious' based on limited information and small studies, feed companies often use these ingredients without knowing or fully understanding, how this type of diet impacts on overall health. The area of Equine Natural Nutrition is currently under represented and at Phytorigins, we take the stance that horses have evolved to eat in a certain way, we firmly align ourselves with the more organic way of keeping horses and use information from our own research/analysis and that from organic farming science. From this platform we seek collaborations with Universities interested in organic welfare of animals, investigating the health and welfare of horses using the latest scientific methods available.

These universities are supported by funding through the BBSRC and we as a business have been fortunate enough to be part of some important collaborations which have allowed us to develop a unique view on equine nutrition  which has been underpinned by research undertaken by leading scientists such as Prof Jamie Newbold, Drs. Kirsty Dougal, Debbie Nash,  Chris Gwenin,  Gabi De Fuente, and Alejandro Belanche.

We view the collaborations with Universities and leading scientists as a journey, always seeking to understand the whole jigsaw rather than individual pieces, the four years spent with Prof Jamie Newbold researching the microbiota of the equine intestinal tract has provided us with a unique insight into the role that diet plays in health and well being.
